Applying Eco Tan: the ultimate guide
Date Posted:18 February 2021
Applying self-tanner can be difficult. You might miss patches; you might get streaks, or you might get an uneven finish. Using a high-quality tanner like those from Eco Tan can prevent all the above. But getting your technique right is still so important. This blog will ensure you achieve a smooth, even, and radiant tan every time.
How to use Eco Tan
Eco Tan is an Aussie Tanning brand that made Australian history as the first and only tanning brand to become certified organic by the Organic Food Chain under the Australian government. You can learn more about the different Eco Tan tanning products in our blog All you need to know about Eco Tan tanning products.
There are a few general guidelines when it comes to applying Eco Tan body-tanning products. Firstly, we recommend using the Eco Tan Luxurious Applicator Mitt. This mitt is designed to achieve professional tanning results every time. It doesn’t soak up too much of the product and it ensures an even application. Plus, you won’t need to worry about tan-stained hands.
The best part? One side is for Eco Tan tanning waters such as Face Tan Water and Hempitan Body Water. And the other side is for Eco Tan certified organic creams and mousse such as Winter Skin, Invisible Tan & Cacao Tanning Mousse.
Exfoliate and hydrate: for an even application we recommend exfoliating about 24-48 hours before you apply your tan. Using a gentle exfoliator like the Eco by Sonya Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub will remove dead skin cells and even the skin’s texture to help achieve a smooth tan application. This scrub is also great at removing old tan from the skin’s surface.
For a serious exfoliation and/or to remove old tan use the Eco Tan Extreme Exfoliant Glove. This glove works great with the Eco by Sonya Pink Himalayan Salt. Together this duo provides your skin with deep exfoliation and lasting hydration.
*Tip: Avoid exfoliating more than twice a week and closer than 24 hours to applying your tan, as the self-tanner needs some dead skin cells to cling to.
The next key step to achieving an even tan is using a body moisturiser. Self-tanners can pick-up or sink into dry patches on the skin – especially areas like knees and elbows. Use an all-natural skin hydrator like the Eco by Sonya Coconut Body Milk. This nourishing lotion hydrates and relieves dehydrated skin to promote a radiant glow.
*Tip: Apply Eco by Sonya Coconut Body Milk regularly to prolong the life of your tan.
You can achieve an even tan and maintain it easily with Eco by Sonya’s Ultimate Scrub & Hydrate Pack.

Developing times for Eco Tan products
For Eco Tan Hempitan Body Water:
Leave the tan for 1 hour to settle, then wash off. The tan will continue to develop for 24 hours after washing off.
For Eco Winter Skin:
This is a gradual tanning lotion, meaning it will develop slowly and achieve a more subtle result – perfect for winter. Use over consecutive days to build tan to desire result.
For Eco Tan Invisible Tan:
This tan develops best overnight or for at least 8 hours.
For Eco Tan Cacao Tanning Mousse:
Leave on for 1 hour for a light coffee complexion or for 4 hours for a deeper bronze finish.
How do I apply Face Tan Water to get the best results?
For best results, we recommend you apply Face Tan Water to clean, dry skin just like you would a toner. Use Face Tan Water instead of a toner, however, as applying another toner will remove the Face Tan Water. Use your fingers to apply, as a cotton wool pad can soak up too much of the product. There’s no need to worry about staining as Face Tan Water uses no harsh dyes, synthetic or artificial ingredients. Apply about half a teaspoon of product per application – enough to see a thin layer all over the face. Wait for the product to dry before applying your moisturiser and other products. Use Face Tan Water a few days in a row (2-3 days per week) for a gradual build-up and radiant glow.
* Tip: use a soap and SLS free cleanser as these ingredients are known to strips tans.
How long does Eco Tan last?
Your tan should last between 7-10 days depending on how you look after it. We recommend you moisturise daily to prolong your tan. Using a gradual tanning moisturiser like Eco Tan’s Winter Skin is great as it will moisturise and enhance the colour of your tan for longer. If you don’t exfoliate properly before applying tan, it’s also more likely your tan will flake off as it fades – appearing uneven and blotchy.
