The cost of natural beauty

Date Posted:20 January 2019

It is true that natural beauty costs more, but there are good reasons why you should spend that little bit extra for natural beauty care.

Why do natural beauty products cost more?

It all comes down to quality. Commercial beauty products use inexpensive ingredients such as artificial chemicals and synthetic fragrances that are designed to imitate those found in nature. However, these ingredients are toxic and harmful to health in the long run. The second thing to consider is the cost of farming natural ingredients versus manufacturing it synthetically in a lab. Ingredients that are made artificially are much cheaper to produce than farmed ingredients, resulting in the end product holding a much lower price tag. Similarly, organic farming versus conventional farming contributes significantly to the increased price of natural products and organic brands. Conventional farms use harmful insecticides and herbacides, as well as artificial fertilisers, which not only speeds up growth but also produces higher crop yields. Compared to organic farming, which does not use any pesticides or fertilisers, the amount of crop yields from organic farming is considerably less. Basically, the cost of organic farming is higher while also producing less crop yields, resulting in the end product being more expensive. Brands that use organic ingredients can expect to pay a much higher price for raw ingredients compared to natural beauty products or commercial beauty brands.

Does organic certification make natural products more expensive?

The short answer is yes. For a product to bare the organic certification logo, the company must pay a fee along with adhering to strict regulation. While the organic requirements may vary from country to country, in general organic products including organic skin care and makeup must avoid the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics or genetically modified seed along with undergoing strict factory inspections to ensure the company is adhering to organic regulations.

Consumers choosing products that are certified by Australian Certified Organic (ACO) have every assurance that the cosmetics products have been thoroughly assessed in order to guarantee that are compliant with the standard requirements. ACO certifies organic cosmetics under the Australian National StandardNational Organic Program (USDA), and COSMOS standards. While the standards are recognised as some of the most stringent organic standards for cosmetics internationally, each has different characteristics and requirements. At Sassy Organics, we love certified organic products, however we recognise that this process is expensive and not all suppliers can afford it. Therefore, we will stock products which are not certified, however they must contain high content of organic ingredients and must not include any of the unwanted ingredients such as parabens, sulfates, GMO, triclosan etc.

Which natural makeup brands to trust?

You can trust organic skincare brands that are certified organic, as this means the product has undergone strict regulations and does not contain synthetic chemicals, fragrances or genetically modified ingredients. We love Zuii Organic for all your organic beauty and natural makeup needs. However, there are still a number of reputable natural makeup brands that are not certified organic. Rest assured, all brands carried on our site are of the highest quality and free from toxic chemicals. Some of our favourite best natural skin care brands include Zuii Organic, Hamani and Neek.

In terms of certification, Australian Certification Body applies basic rules including what stamement can be made on the product. For example:

  • 100% certified organic content, label can state ā€œ100% organicā€ + bud logo
  • 95%-100% certified organic content, label can state ā€œcertified organicā€ + bud logo
  • 70%-95% certified organic content, label can state ā€œmade with certified organic ingredientsā€, cannot use bud logo but must indicate certification number (i.e. ā€˜ACO 99999Pā€™) (*exception for cosmetics)
  • <70 % certified organic content cannot makeany certification claims, can only list ingredients as ā€˜organicā€™, cannot include certification number or bud logo

Things to consider when buying natural and organic makeup online

Always ensure you read the ingredients label when buying natural makeup online. If the website wonā€™t show you the ingredients, skip it and go somewhere else. This is because products marked as natural, organic or vegan beauty can be misleading and may still contain nasty ingredients. Look out for ingredients such as parabens and PEGs along with fragrance such as ā€˜parfumā€™. If you choose to buy organic makeup online, getting a sample first can help you decide on the right shade of natural eye makeup or foundation. Some of our favourite and most trusted brands include Eco Tan, Eco by Sonya, Acure Organics, Wotnot, Zuii Organic and Vanessa Megan.
