Benefits of using vitamin C serum
Date Posted:30 August 2020
Vitamin C is a nutritional superstar, hands down. It’s one of the most important vitamins for the human body, with virtually nothing it can’t do. For skincare, vitamin C certainly doesn’t disappoint. Vitamin C skincare products provide antioxidant support to the skin as well as assisting in the formation of new collagen, making vitamin C one of the best ingredients in anti aging skincare. Vitamin C helps to prevent free radical damage, especially damage caused by air pollution and sun exposure. It’s also required for the growth and repair of skin membranes, and using a vitamin C serum or vitamin c cream can help to maintain the skin barrier function.
Vitamin C and hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation can occur in small patches such small dark spots on the face, or it may affect larger areas of skin and cover most of the body. Hyperpigmentation can result from different causes. Melasma is a type of pigmentation that is thought to be caused by hormonal changes, and often occurs during or after pregnancy. Sunspots are caused by excess sun exposure over time and usually occur on areas exposed to the sun most frequently like the hands and face. Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation may occur because of injury or from acne lesions. As well as providing excellent skin nutrition, vitamin C serum has a skin brightening effect and is effective as a treatment to lighten dark spots caused by hyperpigmentation. A rich vitamin c eye serum is used for tired and puffy eyes to brighten and firm the delicate area.
Vitamin C serum and acne
If you currently suffer from acne or even just the occasional spot, you may notice the dark blemish left on your skin long after the pimple has cleared up. Using a vitamin C mask can help to fade dark spots, resulting in a lighter and brighter complexion. Combining products – what not to do
While using a product with vitamin C as one of the main actives, it’s best to avoid any products that contain glycolic acid. This is because vitamin C is acidic, which is exactly how vitamin C works on the skin. The acidity helps to dissolve dead skin cells, allowing new cell formation for fresher, brighter looking skin. Glycolic acid and vitamin C, when used together, can decrease the effectiveness of the treatment, due to glycolic acid potentially interacting and altering the pH of the vitamin C. Glycolic acid occurs naturally in some foods, but in skin care products it is usually added synthetically. The purpose of glycolic acid in skin care is to exfoliate the surface layer of skin cells, so this ingredient is mostly found in exfoliators, but also in some creams and serums. If you have combined vitamin C and glycolic acid, there is nothing to be concerned about, you will simply get a better effect by avoiding using them together.
