Many make the mistake of assuming our empty toiletries can go into our regular household recycling. This simply isn't true. The various materials used and the leftover product inside means it's cheaper for the industry to make new beauty packages, than to recycle old ones.
Introducing TerraCycle
TerraCycle is a social enterprise that provides modern recycling and waste-reduction solutions to both businesses and consumers. TerraCycle initially turned waste into plant food and fertilisers. It then expanded into other recycling programs – forming partnerships with many major companies across the US.
In 2013, the enterprise launched in Australia and New Zealand, marking over 20 countries of operation. To date, TerraCycle has collected billions of pieces of waste across 21 countries and raised over 44 million dollars for charities worldwide.
How It Works
Follow these simple steps to recycle your empty beauty products and earn your AU $10.00 store credit.
Check Your Council First
First, check to see if your council already has a program to help locals recycle their empty personal care products.
Start Collecting
If not, simply start collecting the empty products in a recyclable box – your original Sassy Organics delivery box works great.
Add Your Details
Once you've collected a couple of months' worth, or a full box, of packaging, write your name, phone number, email and address on a piece of paper and put INSIDE the box. This way we know who to give the AU $10.00 store credit reward to!

What CAN'T I Send Back?
- Aerosol cans
- Electronic items
- Perfume bottles
- Any bio-medical or bio-hazardous waste
- Nail polish bottles and nail polish remover bottles
- Any contents of packaging such as nail polish, lotion, soap or ointments
What Happens With My Empty Products?
TerraCycle first separates the empty products by type. The plastic is then typically shredded, washed, melted down into plastic pellets and turned into recycled products such as outdoor furniture like picnic benches, kids' playgrounds and garden bed boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do the products I send back need to be from Sassy Organics?
No! You can send back any empty beauty and personal care packaging, regardless of where you purchased it. We accept products from any brand or retailer.
Do I need to wash or rinse the empty packaging before sending?
No, you don't need to wash or rinse the packages. However, they do need to be as empty as possible. TerraCycle recommends cutting the packages or using a tool to scrape out as much product as possible before sending.
How do I receive my AU $10.00 store credit?
Make sure to include a piece of paper inside your box with your name, phone number, email and address. Once we receive and process your package, we'll add AU $10.00 in store credit to your Sassy Organics account and send you a confirmation email.
What if I don't have a Sassy Organics account?
No problem! Simply create an account by visiting our Account Registration Page. Make sure the email you use matches the one you include in your recycling box so we can apply your credit correctly.
How much packaging should I collect before sending?
We recommend collecting a couple of months' worth of empty packaging, or until you have a full box. Your original Sassy Organics delivery box works great for this! There's no minimum requirement, but sending a fuller box helps reduce the environmental impact of shipping.
Who pays for the shipping?
You are responsible for the cost of shipping your recycling box to us. We recommend using Australia Post's regular parcel service for the most affordable option.
Can I send aerosol cans or perfume bottles?
No, unfortunately aerosol cans, perfume bottles, nail polish bottles, and nail polish remover bottles cannot be accepted in this program. These items require special handling and should be disposed of through your local council's hazardous waste program.
How long does it take to receive my store credit?
Once we receive your package, please allow up to 2 weeks for processing. You'll receive a confirmation email once your AU $10.00 store credit has been added to your account.
Is there a limit to how many times I can participate?
There's no limit! You can send us your empty packaging as often as you like and receive AU $10.00 store credit for each box you send. The more you recycle, the more you save on your favourite sustainable beauty products.
What happens if I forget to include my details in the box?
Unfortunately, if we can't identify who sent the package, we won't be able to credit your account. Please make sure to include a piece of paper with your name, phone number, email, and address inside the box before sealing it.
