Woohoo Body Frequently Asked Questions

I have sensitive skin - is it OK to use a bicarb soda deodorant?

Lots of bicarb soda based natural deodorants cause irritation because they are too alkaline while our skin is acidic. So when you put something too alkaline on your skin, your skin starts to react. Before the Woohoo! All Natural Deodorant Paste was created, Aaron (founder of Woohoo) couldn't use any bicarb soda deodorants because they would just make him itch like mad after about 3 days. So he decided to make one that he could use. All he needed to do was lower the pH without taking away and deodorant powers. It sounds easy but it took about 18 different formulas to get it right. It is the first natural deodorant Aaron has ever been able to use, and we've heard the same good news from other people with sensitive skin too. So YES it is OK to use a bicarb soda deodorant, but only if it has been carefully formulated to have a lower pH :)

Other natural deodorants with bicarb soda have caused irritation. Will Woohoo irritate me too?

Woohoo have worked very hard on their formula to make sure that it DOESN'T aggravate even the most sensitive skin. And to date they still haven't heard any reports of anyone experiencing irritation from Woohoo! This is all possible because they've carefully balanced the pH so it's not too alkaline but it still busts odour with the best of them :)

I've been using an anti-perspirant - will Woohoo work for me?

Firstly, congrats on making it this far! Ditching your anti-perspirant is a brilliant move. If you’re used to using an antiperspirant, please remember that this isn’t one! The Woohoo deodorant works by neutralising odour and keeps you dryer by absorbing moisture, but it DOESN’T block your pores with aluminium to stop you from sweating. The worst case is that it can take a week or 2 for your body to adjust to this type of deodorant but it’s worth the wait! But for some people all it takes is a couple of smelly days before your body has detoxed and Woohoo conquers all of your bad smells.

Can kids use Woohoo?

Yes, it's completely safe for your growing children to use Woohoo. Younger kids might need you to keep an eye on them to make sure they're not using too much though, and don't let them forget to wash under their arms daily so they don't get any build-up of deodorant.

Is the Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste safe to use during pregnancy?

The short answer is YES :) But...

The long answer:

The Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste contains essential oils because they stay well away from artificial fragrances. When it comes to essential oils there is no clear cut answer about whether or not you should use them during pregnancy. Woohoo belief is that many are safe at the very low levels that they use them. But some definitely need to be avoided during pregnancy because they're emmenagogues (stimulates blood flow in the pelvic area). These are oils such as clary sage, sweet marjoram, vetiver and juniper. Woohoo DO NOT use any essential oil that is considered a definite 'no no' during pregnancy. The essential oils they do use are at a very low percentages with the total of essential oil being under 1% which it is considered OK when used topically (by some, you'll find lots of conflicting advice on the net). So it is up to you if you are comfortable with this. For an anecdotal personal experience, Phoebe (Woohoo founder) used all of Woohoo products during her last pregnancy without an issues. The only other product that they advise pregnant ladies about is Black Seed Oil as it is a known emmenagogue when used as a food supplement. No one has given any recommendations when it used on the skin, so they always stay conservative and advise against using it. Webmd has some more information if you want to dig into the details :) Please get in touch if you have more questions! P.S. Woohoo got a couple of new Woohoo "flavours" coming soon that don't contain any essential oils.

What are those dark brown specks I can see in my Woohoo deodorant?

Gosh, you're observant! :) If you look closely at your Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste (Urban scent) you might see some dark brown specks from time to time. These are little bits of vanilla. We don't use any artificial fragrances - it's natural all the way!

Should I be concerned about bacterial contamination with fingers going in the pot and into my armpits?

That's a great question about the bacteria which has a very simple answer. Bacteria require water in order to survive, and Woohoo is a completely waterless product. That's part of the beauty of it - it doesn't even require preservatives since there's nothing for bacteria to feed on. A roll-on on the other hand is a water based product that can be a lovely home for bacteria.

Does the zinc in Woohoo contain nanoparticles?

No way, Jose! Woohoo zinc is non-nano. This means that the particles are bigger (micron size), rather than nano size, so you don't need to be concerned about the potential health risks linked to nano particles.

There are lumps in my Woohoo - is that normal??

Summer is awesome. The warm weather means beaches, BBQs, and all round good times. And to add to the fun this last Summer, Newcastle (the location of Woohoo HQ – where all your wootastic goodness is made) has experienced some absolutely blistering hot days. We can’t remember another summer with so many days over 40C (or 105F for some of our international warriors). It has been a real sweat box that has verged on the ridiculous and hot weather like this makes people go a little loopy sometimes. While the heat makes some loopy, it can also make Woohoo go a little lumpy.

It’s a perfectly natural thing that shea butter can do. It’s one of the joys of working with natural ingredients. Just like kids, they like to change behaviour to test us. Shea butter has high amounts of stearic acid (a fatty acid) which can recrystallise or form lumps when the mercury gets over 35 and then cools back down slowly. When Woohoo is made, the shea butter is melted and everything is mixed and homogenised. The homogenizer blasts all the fat molecules making them really small. We then we cool them down as fast as we can. This doesn’t allow the shea butter’s fatty acid molecules any time to form little balls with the clays and powders and makes your favourite deodorant lurvely and smooth. Unfortunately when the outside temperature is above 35 degrees, the shea butter warms back up again which can let the little balls start to form. They’re more noticeable (or notice-a-ball bahahah) when there are clays and powders to grab onto. So if you have a Woohoo that has some little lumps, it has been above 35C and then cooled back down slowly. It’s nothing to worry about as the lumps easily dissolve when rubbed between your fingers. Your Woohoo has not been damaged or gone off, so there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

Is a spatula included with the 40g tins or samples of deodorant ?

No, spatula's aren't included, however you could use your clean, dry finger tip or the end of a teaspoon :)

How do I apply the Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste?

It's dead easy :) With clean, dry hands use the tip of your index finger collect to a pea sized amount of deodorant and warm it in your fingertips. Rub it under your arm until it disappears (just like you would a moisturiser).

Can I use the Woohoo on my feet?

Yes! If you suffer from smelly feet you can apply the Woohoo on your feet just the same as you would under your arms. Please remember that it might make the soles of your feet a little slippery (as a benefit it can help stop rubbing/chafing!) so don't dive into your thongs and hit the dance floor right after applying. If your feet are always excessively sweaty, it might be a good idea to talk to your medical professional as they might be able to help.

Can I use Woohoo under my breasts?

Yes you certainly can :) If you're big-breasted and get sweaty under your breasts or suffer from heat rash then Woohoo is perfect for you. Apply under your breasts just the same way you do under your arms.  You'l find it helps big time with chafing and rubbing too.

How do I get the Woohoo out of that cute little jar?

The most fuss free way to get your Woohoo out is with clean, dry fingers. If you've got long fingernails, you might want to use a teaspoon or cosmetic spatula and keep it handy in the bathroom!  We're definitely going to look at a stick style applicator, so let us know if this is something you're super keen on :)

Why does my deodorant sometimes have little granules? (don't worry there's a perfectly good explanation!)

Shea butter is an amazing ingredient and as much as we love it for its skin superhero properties, it does have a mind of its own sometimes! These little granules that sometimes happen are perfectly natural and normal, and doesn’t mean that your deodorant has gone bad or that something’s wrong with it. This is a common occurrence with natural, unrefined Shea butter and is a result of the shea butter being in changing temperatures. As it melts then hardens again, little lumps might form. So the best spot to store your Woohoo is somewhere cool. Your deodorant is still 100% as effective and the lumps will melt as soon as you warm the deodorant in your fingers before you apply.
